Whether you're spending Valentine’s Day over a candlelit dinner with your man or over martinis with your best girlfriends, the launch of Corus Entertainment’s new digital specialty channel Cosmopolitan TV on February 14 promises to fulfill all your needs.
Much like the magazine, with its scintillating sex advice, tips on how and where to pick up guys, and its monthly hunky guy with his shirt off, the television channel and its flagship half-hour weekly magazine show ‘‘Oh So Cosmo’’ offer up the same dose of uninhibited and informed content.
Sitting down to talk with Josie Dye, 102.1 The Edge radio personality and the bubbly host of ‘Oh So Cosmo’, it feels just like talking to a girlfriend. Dye, who’s been a “Cosmo girl” for as long as she can remember, is thrilled to bring the magazine to the small screen. “It’s going to be just like the magazine,” says Dye. “Fast, action-packed, lots of info, lots of stats and lots of colours.”
In the first episode of ‘Oh So Cosmo’, Dye scours a dog park for hot guys and explores the question of whether women are destined for spinster-hood if they’re not hitched by the age of 30. Even the magazine’s notoriously steamy monthly quiz will be a part of the show. In the first installment, Dye quizzes women in bars to find out their perspectives on men's body language, with surprising results.
Describing the feel of ‘Oh So Cosmo’ as a “girls’ night out,” Dye says, “What do you do on a Friday night? You have a margarita and you’re hanging out with your girlfriends before you go to a club and you talk about guys.” But like the Cosmo girl herself, there’s more to the program than gossiping about guys.
Viewers can expect segments on style, health and beauty, entertainment and advice on new and fun activities to do with your girlfriends, such as pole dancing and rock-climbing sessions.
Guests such as the Toronto Raptors and alternative band Hot Hot Heat are slated to appear, as is the “Blonde Bombshell,” who dishes to contributing reporter Jacquie Skeete on how to release your inner bombshell.
Often the tables are turned on the opposite sex. Male correspondent Wilder Weir’s point of view gives viewers the saucy scoop on “what they’re thinking about instead of what we think they’re thinking about,” says Dye. Aware most men are closet Cosmo readers, Dye believes that tuning in may help some guys with their game. “They’ll learn tons,” says Dye. “It’s an inside look into the women’s mind.”
Finding out what makes the Cosmo girl tick will be revealed through both online-generated info and viewer interaction. Poll results from the CosmoTV website will appear on ‘Oh So Cosmo,’ and viewers will be able to text in their answers to questions on the show – like ‘skanky versus sexy’. Online, viewers can contribute to message boards, comment on sex tips, read Dye’s blog, enter contests and submit and rate men for the CosmoTV Bachelor Search. Once Canada’s prime hotties are whittled down to a dozen, Dye will go across the country to interview them and viewers will be able to comment online about who they think has the goods.
In addition to the flagship show, the channel offers a line-up of blockbuster chick flicks, comedy and drama series such as ‘Sex and The City’ and reality programs, including ‘The Bachelor.’
Dye is surprised that it’s taken this long for such an unapologetically honest show and channel to launch. Where the W Network is the older, sophisticated sister in the Corus Entertainment family tree, Dye describes CosmoTV as for the younger girl who’s looking for the right person, or just enjoying singledom. Having recently ended a long-term relationship herself, Dye has been learning and discovering a lot about herself, men and friendships since becoming the host of ‘Oh So Cosmo’. She’s also been living the Cosmo girl life in the process. “Honestly, I just want to have fun,” says Dye with a laugh. And really, don’t all Cosmo girls just wanna have fun?
‘Oh So Cosmo’ launches on CosmoTV on Thursday, February 14 at 10:00 pm ET to Bell ExpressVu customers. Following its Valentine’s Day debut, the show will air on Wednesday evenings at 9:00 pm ET.
