Erin Karpluk thinks she may know why she was chosen to play Erica Strange in CBC's time travelling romantic comedy Being Erica. 'Sometimes I wonder if all the casting directors were sitting around in a room thinking: "Who's awkward and kind of accident prone and kind of a loser?" and maybe thought of me,' she says, laughing.
The 30-year-old actress who hails from Alberta landed the lead role in Erica after eight years of steady acting gigs in Canada and the US. Her most recent roles have been in notable series like Men in Trees, The L Word and The Guard. In fact, she heard the news about her new starring role while she was filming in LA.
Being Erica revolves around an educated woman in her 30s who bases her unimpressive career and romantic life on past regrets. Erica decides to visit a psycholgist named Dr. Tom (Michael Riley) in order to get out of the rut she finds herself in. It turns out Tom is a bit of a magician and he gives Erica the chance to travel back in time to fix the mistakes she thinks may have tainted her life.
The premise may give you visions of Back to the Future, but the show is less about plutonium-powered DeLoreans than it is about Erica herself.
"Dr. Tom does explain there are rules to the time travel, there are ramifications to the time travel and there is a bit of quantum mechanics that he talks about," Karpluk says. "But we never really get into the actual science of the ways she travels back. The time travel element is not so much of a science fiction as much as it is a catalyst for her growth and development as a person. "
Karpluk reveals that if she were given the chance to go back in time, she probably wouldn't change anything. "All the mistakes have brought me to this point in time," she says. Then, after a beat she adds: "But I did miss a Radiohead concert!"
Despite the fact that it has been a long road to success, Karpluk says she would not even be tempted to change anything about her profession. "Acting was the one thing in life I never second guessed," she says.
It doesn't hurt to have the music and wardrobe department help you out, though.
"A lot of the time we're channeling Shannen Doherty in 90210 - mom jeans, big eyebrows, shoulder pads," Karpluk says. "I don't know about you but if I listen to 'November Rain' by Guns 'n' Roses, they transport me back to the grade nine Christmas dance where I really wanted Curtis Harvey to dance with me."
Being Erica airs Mondays at 9pm on CBC.
